Homes develop cracks in Srinagar's Rainawari due to land subsidence
“Some homes in the Khwajapora Surteng area of Rainawari started to develop cracks on June 17, that became wider over the next few days,” officials said.
In Srinagar’s Rainawari area, six buildings have developed cracks due to suspected land subsidence, causing panic among locals. The administration formed a nine-member expert committee to investigate and suggest solutions. Previous studies linked subsidence to historical underground pottery mining. Similar incidents have occurred recently in other parts of Jammu and Kashmir, forcing many families to vacate their homes. Experts attribute these issues to both natural factors, such as groundwater dissolution and earthquakes, and human activities like mining and urban development.
